Trochilidae

Curtis and I paddled up a small creek that is a tributary to Lake Comanche to visit a heronry that we like to see each spring. The water was so low that we had to walk the last bit of the way. We crept through the woods to a good viewing place and just sat still for long moments. The nesting herons were incredible. Primitive looking and beautiful. Graceful. Their young poking long beaks out of the nests to see us. We were just peacefully watching when a hummingbird buzzed around our heads. It was attracted to my pink bandana. Not finding food, it perched on a low branch just arms reach from us. We all just sat there, the herons, the hummingbird and us....watching. -Bunny
