By Fear or By Love

I was once told that one's behavior is motivated either by fear or by love.
I think there is truth in that.

Friendship is a sheltering tree.

-Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The exact goal of a bully is to manipulate you into feeling intimidated so that they can get what they want out of you.
Do not help them to achieve this goal.
No one controls your emotions but you.
Eleanor Roosevelt wrote that no one can make you feel inferior without you giving them the permission to do so.  Don't do so.

A great deal of sanity is gained
when one stops trying to make sense
out of nonsensical behavior.

When someone is condescending towards you,
it is their mistake in thinking
that their assessment of you is in any way
who you are.

Tonight, I am grateful for:

-every person who has defended the rights and freedoms that I enjoy as a citizen of the United States. If any veteran reads this: Thank you, thank you, thank you.

-my good friend Nikolas P. gifting me 3 wonderful dark chocolate bars from a chocolate shop he visited in Noe Valley in San Francisco. One bar is fruity, one is earthy, and one is astringent and one of the most bizarre tastes I've ever experienced.

-food, food, food; for having much good food to eat. Thank You, God.

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." -John 15:13

I am grateful for:

-meeting my new therapist yesterday. We seem like a potentially good team...

-the little wooden incense holder (possibly from India) that I found in a box of junk near the freebox area yesterday morning. I have been eyeing some similarly shaped ceramic ones that I've no business spending money on...

-the beauty that I personally find in patterned fabrics juxtaposed against one another; in an ensemble of clothing, in an interior...

Every Stray Thought

"Keep a notebook.
Travel with it, eat with it, sleep with it.
Slap into it every stray thought
that flutters up into your brain..."

-Jack London

Exquisite Words

Last night I finished watching The River, a 1951 adaptation by Jean Renoir of Rumer Godden's novel of the same name. Some of the prose captured was truly beautiful. I am tempted to read the book, which would be my first by her.  She and Jean Renoir wrote the screenplay for the film (which was shot over the course of a year on location in India where she grew up).  Her exquisite words inspire me to write.

Yesterday afternoon, the smell of freshly cut green grass took me back to happy summer evenings spent in the backyard of the little gray house I grew up in on the dirt road in rural Texas.

I am grateful for:

-the eloquence and truth spoken to me by my sisters in Christ Charla Fernandez, Bunny Stahnke, Teresa Wilson, and Theresa Tognozzi. Thank you...

-a new-to-me brass bowl and a woven coyote mask, both from the freebox. One now nests with similar items upon the nicely cluttered surface of my coffee table; one hangs upon the wall above the table where I am now writing...

-the tale end of the day...

(I realize that the illustration above is of a fox and not of a coyote, but I do like it.)

Today I am grateful for:

-friends who share my bizarro sense of humor...

-more and more, an increased understanding that my value is based solely in belonging to Jesus and not at all in how other people treat me...

-songs that, after many years of depression and self-condemnation, make me feel happy:
Pharrell William's Happy is my favorite song of all time.  Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush also brings me great joy...

What songs make you feel giddy?

Autumnal Abundance

Today I am grateful for:

-a new-to-me jacket and two shirts in the freebox...
-the shining of the exquisite, golden, Autumnal sun through the trees and upon the redwood-covered ridge this afternoon...
-Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; the abundant love of Jesus...

A Heavenly Gift

I am grateful for:

dancing this afternoon,
singing this evening,
and sweet gifts:

In the freebox today, I found a cobalt picture frame emblazoned with a gold sun, two crescent moons, and stars in which a new collage I made fits quite well (amazingly, I'd only just been thinking of a frame for the collage, as well as of my fondness for celestial blue & gold decor from the 1990s). I behaved quite badly today and God knew that I would behave as such when He gifted me this little frame. To be the recipient of His undeserved and lavish grace is beyond wonderful and beyond my comprehension. He loves horrible me so much. His knowing gift of a perfect picture frame, though it does in no way compare, causes me to think sweetly more of His perfect gift of love -of salvation- to me in the precious and priceless blood of His Son Jesus Christ.

Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

-Luke 11:11-13 (Jesus)

lovely things in a basket from an afternoon walk along the creek bed and through my neighborhood with Megan Bosch:

-opaque, tumbled glass...
-colorful shards of ceramic and tile...
-remnants of a dried leaf...
-pine cones tinged with burnt orange, one attached to a piece of branch...

Match Box

-in the freebox today...
I've wanted one.  This one is a similar hue as other items in my house.  It may very well be made entirely of lead paint.  I'll just have to resist the urge to repeatedly lick its surface...

Reflecting on the undeserved love I received a while back from a friend, I see how the Lord loves me.  This is His love:  grace-filled; unmerited -and for the the child of God, ever present and unfathomably deeper than that of even the truest earthly friend.
